not just a job...Volunteering at Mary's is not merely a classroom experience. Beyond the daily assignments, we also hope to fully immerse our guests in the rich beauty that Indian culture has to offer.
- We organize excursions to the nearby villages that our students inhabit, so that our volunteers may have a deeper understanding of their background. -Many of our volunteers' weekends are left free, so as to allow them adequate time to travel and experience the sites of Tamil Nadu and India. -Our volunteers live in a home-stay, so as to be fully immersed in the culture of India through its cuisine and family life. Logistics...Program Fee: There is no program fee. In exchange for our volunteers efforts, they will receive room and board and traditional, home-cooked South Indian meals.
Duration: We request that our volunteers commit to a term of between 6-12 weeks. Additional Fees: Our volunteers are responsible for covering the costs of travel, vaccines, health insurance and visa fees. If you are interested in volunteering for Mary's Matriculation please fill out the following application and send it to us at [email protected]. A look at what volunteers do...As a volunteer at Mary's Matriculation, your work is split into two focuses: Teaching and Fundraising.
Teaching: We accept applicants who possess a thorough knowledge of the English language so they may work as supplementary instructors for the students, focusing on Spoken English. Aside from the language component, we also ask our volunteers to introduce a cultural element into their lessons with information about the customs of their home country. Through this, our students both become accustomed to hearing English as it sounds in practice and also gain an understanding of the world around them. Because many of these students may never have the opportunity to travel the world, we have determined to bring the world to them. Fundraising: We also ask that our volunteers assist us in some administrative tasks, such as updating our social media accounts, recruiting future volunteers, and applying for grants to support the school's current projects. Our greatest emphasis is on the latter, and a part of each day will be devoted to searching for and preparing proposals for such grants and potential donors. what we look for in a volunteer...-We look for volunteers who possess a degree of flexibility and open-mindedness that will enable them to live in a culture that differs extremely their own.
-We look for volunteers well-versed in English, who are passionate about the language and about education in general. -We look for volunteers with a good work-ethic, who are capable of planning their own lessons each day. -We looks for volunteers who are adventurous and ready to embrace a new way of life! *Due to certain cultural restraints, we may only accept female volunteers. TESTIMONIALS...* * *
"Being able to teach underprivileged children at Mary's was a blessing opportunity for me. Working at this school not only improved my teaching skills through challenges like language barriers and a different educational system, but through staying at the principal's house it also brought me closer to the open-minded Indians as well as their diverse culture. My experience at Mary's encouraged me to continue my teaching career and made me fall in love with the India itself, as I had plenty of chances to travel, which is why I am coming back this year." Antonia Opelt from Germany, at Mary's from August-October 2012 * * * “Volunteering at Mary’s has been nothing less than a life-changing experience. The feeling of making a difference in these kids’ lives is beyond words and your sense of it only grows with your time here. It’s incredible how a whole school can become your family as it accepts you into its community, revealing not only its educational system, but also individual homes, religions and habits.” Gillian Louise Cooper from USA, at Mary’s from June-July 2014 * * * “When I left for India I didn`t know anything about what was waiting for me here at Mary`s Matriculation school, and I didn`t even imagine that it would have turned out to be one of the best experience of my life. Here I found a family, I experienced the hard and incredible work of the teacher, I met fantastic children and I made a big gift to myself: I grew up. I will never forget the smiles that since the first day till the last second surrounded me during these incredible six weeks.Teaching at Mary`s is not just a work or a volunteering experience, it is a real life-changing experience. “ Greta Riva from Italy, at Mary`s July-August 2014 * * * "When the life gives you an opportunity to change oneself, a challenge which makes you stronger – never miss it. My voluntary work at Mary’s school is not only a chance to practice my teaching skills but also an adventure where I reveal the unique beauty of India. Every day I acquire valuable knowledge that make me grow up. In the children’s eyes I see the genuine desire to learn about the world all they can, and that gives me an incentive to be better for them, to change ourselves together. That is the feeling which makes the life worthwhile." Mariia Kholoshniuk from Ukraine, at Mary's July-August 2015 |
